5 Tips to Quickly Get Your Home Decorated for Fall Unless you start decorating for Christmas shortly following Halloween, the answer is no--it’s not too late to decorate for fall. How often have you lost track of time and fallen short of getting your home decorated for changing seasons? While decorating for each season is not a must, it’s a simple and creative way to change in your everyday life. I’m not sure about you, but in the times we’re living in, I enjoy positive changes. However, I know many people who say they have no idea where to begin. With a few tips, I can help you get your house fall ready -- even at this late time! Tip 1: Pumpkins, Gourds, Mums It’s a no brainer...you simply can not go wrong with the fall staples...pumpkins, gourds and mums. At the very least, start by layering these items around your entrance, and you will instantly get in the fall spirit. If, like me, you live downtown and your porch is close to the public street, you may find that porch seasonal items have a tendency to “walk off.” It’s unfortunate, but it’s a part of the world we live in. Instead, use real or decorative pumpkins and gourds around your home to bring the fall spirit indoors. Whether you’re into minimal décor or going full out, you can not go wrong with these three staples. If you always get your pumpkins, gourds, and mums from stores in town, you may consider this to be a pricey investment that may not be worth your money for just a short time. However, if you are willing to take a drive, you can often find great deals on country roads. For those of you near Ft. Wayne, Churubusco, and Columbia City, if you want to know a great cheap place to purchase pumpkins, feel free to contact me and I’ll share an awesome individual who sells pumpkins that are easy on the billfold. Tip 2: Natural ElementsOften when decorating seasonally, individuals stick to all man-made items. These items are often aesthetically pleasing, but all on their own they often lack character. By adding natural elements, you bring in nature and all it has to offer. It’s also free -- score! Scourge your backyard and neighborhood to find natural elements to add to your décor -- please don’t be "that neighbor" and go into neighbor’s yards without permission. Stick to sidewalks and alleys. Alleys? Yes! You'd be surprised by what natural elements you can find there. It's where I go for pinecones! Notice the difference between these three pictures: Tip 3: Vary HeightsWhatever you do, please make sure your décor has differing heights within the design. As with the example above, you can see how the branch made the display “taller” and “heavier” and matches the weight of the lockers. Use crates, books, and other items to elevate items to give them a taller appearance. Tip 4: Make Small Changes In each season, there are often more than one “holiday” or time for celebrating. Create a display that can easily be adapted for each holiday with the swap of an item or two. In the case of the display above the lockers, the gnome can easily be changed out with a turkey and another art piece to go from a Halloween display to a Thanksgiving display. It’ll create another change, won’t break the budget and celebrates a new holiday. Tip 5: Shop SalesOne HUGE benefit of decorating later in the season is that sales are already happening. Frighteningly enough, stores are ready to exchange their fall and Halloween décor for Christmas décor. Decorate your house for fall now and take advantage of all the savings you can do. Bonus TipSo warm up some apple cider, pull out your cozy clothes, turn on some music and create change in your house. Or if this still isn’t appealing to you, give me a call and I’ll come do the work for you!

Imagine, Design, TransformThe final and most rewarding stage of the 3 part series, “Imagine, Design, Transform” is now complete! As with any design project, the last and final stage is the transformation! This is where you see all your hard work come together and where you get to utilize your space the way you’ve imagined. Full circle from imagination to transformation! Transformation From a dark and unused bedroom to a bright and highly functional laundry room! ChangesAs noted in the previous blog post, some material and design decisions may change between the design and transformation phase. This is often due to the ability of being able to see and experience the design as a whole. Scale, color, and adjustments may need to be made. Expect to make changes to designs, but when deciding on pricey materials, be 100% sure beforehand to ensure your money is spent wisely. I decided the pulls that were picked out for the room were too heavy for the design and switched to simple knobs. Of course that decision wasn’t easy, I spent endless hours researching the possibility of unique knobs that would give the space some extra character. However, due to this being a rental, picking out unique knobs that will be versatile for many tenants with different tastes in the future proved to be impossible. Simple, classy, chrome knobs it is. Tenants can add their personality in other ways. Read on to find how! Neutral FriendlyWith only white, chrome, and touches of gray, this neutral-toned room can be customized by tenants to fit their individual styles. Whether they decide to stick with a monochromatic color scheme or splash color into the room, this space can be made their own through artwork, textiles, or accessories placed on shelves, walls or the window. For those who enjoy an abundance of items when decorating, using the uppermost shelf provides endless decorating options! Add a large sign, antique laundry items and other décor items that speak to you. I'm more of a minimalist decorator with a touch of décor, but it would be great fun to decorate that uppermost shelf for Christmas and other occasions. Other PossibilitiesWhen designing this space, I played around with many other ideas for the opposite wall from the washer and dryer: maybe we wanted to add extra storage for cleaning supplies (not needed for an apartment with ample closets), maybe we wanted to add a fold-down ironing board, maybe we wanted to add a table for folding, maybe… maybe… maybe. I decided to leave it open. In a rental, it is important to not dictate too much how someone may want/need to use a space. This room has an adorable, tiny half bath located in it. Tenants may want to use it as an extra dressing room if they have more than one kid sharing a room. Adding a bench, baskets and hooks can change this room into a laundry room/utility room/mudroom that would be highly useful if coming in from the back door from the garage. ConclusionWhen it comes to design, possibilities are endless! Let’s imagine, design, and transform together!
