5 Tips to Quickly Get Your Home Decorated for Fall

Unless you start decorating for Christmas shortly following Halloween, the answer is no--it’s not too late to decorate for fall.

How often have you lost track of time and fallen short of getting your home decorated for changing seasons? While decorating for each season is not a must, it’s a simple and creative way to change in your everyday life. I’m not sure about you, but in the times we’re living in, I enjoy positive changes. However, I know many people who say they have no idea where to begin. With a few tips, I can help you get your house fall ready -- even at this late time!

Tip 1: Pumpkins, Gourds, Mums

It’s a no brainer...you simply can not go wrong with the fall staples...pumpkins, gourds and mums. At the very least, start by layering these items around your entrance, and you will instantly get in the fall spirit. If, like me, you live downtown and your porch is close to the public street, you may find that porch seasonal items have a tendency to “walk off.” It’s unfortunate, but it’s a part of the world we live in. Instead, use real or decorative pumpkins and gourds around your home to bring the fall spirit  indoors. Whether you’re into minimal décor or going full out, you can not go wrong with these three staples.

Yes pumpkins and mums die, but is that not what fall is all about? While we're appreciating Autumn's beauty, it is fact dying to make way for winter.
If you always get your pumpkins, gourds, and mums from stores in town, you may consider this to be a pricey investment that may not be worth your money for just a short time. However, if you are willing to take a drive, you can often find great deals on country roads. For those of you near Ft. Wayne, Churubusco, and Columbia City, if you want to know a great cheap place to purchase pumpkins, feel free to contact me and I’ll share an awesome individual who sells pumpkins that are easy on the billfold.

Tip 2: Natural Elements

Often when decorating seasonally, individuals stick to all man-made items. These items are often aesthetically pleasing, but all on their own they often lack character. By adding natural elements, you bring in nature and all it has to offer. It’s also free -- score! Scourge your backyard and neighborhood to find natural elements to add to your décor -- please don’t be "that neighbor" and go into neighbor’s yards without permission. Stick to sidewalks and alleys. Alleys? Yes! You'd be surprised by what natural elements you can find there. It's where I go for pinecones!

The addition of a gnarly branch adds height and loads of interest.

Tip 3: Vary Heights

Whatever you do, please make sure your décor has differing heights within the design. As with the example above, you can see how the branch made the display “taller” and “heavier” and matches the weight of the lockers. Use crates, books, and other items to elevate items to give them a taller appearance.

Tip 4: Make Small Changes

In each season, there are often more than one “holiday” or time for celebrating. Create a display that can easily be adapted for each holiday with the swap of an item or two. In the case of the display above the lockers, the gnome can easily be changed out with a turkey and another art piece to go from a Halloween display to a Thanksgiving display. It’ll create another change, won’t break the budget and celebrates a new holiday.

Tip 5: Shop Sales

One HUGE benefit of decorating later in the season is that sales are already happening. Frighteningly enough, stores are ready to exchange their fall and Halloween décor for Christmas décor. Decorate your house for fall now and take advantage of all the savings you can do.

Bonus Tip

So warm up some apple cider, pull out your cozy clothes, turn on some music and create change in your house. Or if this still isn’t appealing to you, give me a call and I’ll come do the work for you!
